Have you ever noticed the other ingredients in almond milk. In this Back To Basics post we share our 3 ingredient how to make homemade almond milk recipe.

Today, let’s add another Back To Basics recipe to your kitchen tool box. I want to teach you how to make homemade almond milk. Why? 1. It’s delicious. 2. It’s nutritious. 3. When you make it at home it has 3 ingredients– almonds, water and salt. When you buy it at the store, that’s not the case.

I’ve been taking a closer look at nutrition labels and ingredient labels lately. I recently picked up a can of coconut milk and actually gasped “What?!?!?” in the middle of the grocery aisle. Why doesn’t coconut milk just have coconut and water in it? Well, with our Homemade Coconut Milk Recipe, it does, but when you buy it at the store it has thickeners and preservatives in it.

It seems like almost everything you buy, that comes in a can or package, has additives in it. The reason is pretty basic– to extend the shelf life. But is it good for us? A simple google search will tell us, no.

Here are the ingredients listed in a carton of a top-selling almond milk:

Almondmilk (Filtered Water, Almonds), Evaporated Cane Juice, Calcium Carbonate, Sea Salt, Potassium Citrate,Carrageenan, Sunflower Lecithin, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2, D-Alpha-Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E)

Today I’m going to help you get that ingredient list down to 3 ingredients. Making your own almond milk is easy to do and it’s a ton of fun to play around with the flavors you add to it. More on that below. Read on for our How to Make Homemade Almond Milk Recipe.

2. Drain water and rinse almonds well. At this point you will notice that the skins of the almonds easily slip off. If you want, you can remove the almond skins. I usually leave them on.

Sieve method of making almond milk

4. Pour almond mixture through a nut milk bag or a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. If using a nut milk bag, squeeze until all liquid is released. If using a sieve, press with a spoon until all liquid has released. The liquid is your almond milk!

5. Store almond milk in a glass jar in your fridge for 3-5 days. Shake before using.

Note: Dehydrate or bake the the almond pulp on low temperature to make almond meal!
