DIY Decorated Christmas Colouring Cookies with Sugar Cookie Recipe

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably knee deep in preparations for the holidays. The kitchen here is in full swing, and I’m baking up a Christmas cookie storm. From biscotti to gingerbread, shortbread to thumbprints, there seems to be a lot to do before the jolly guy arrives.

Lately I’ve been missing the days when little fingers were eager to help me in the kitchen. I called upon the next best thing recently, when I invited my nieces and nephews over to share in the festivities and decorate some christmas cookies with me. Truth be told, once the cookies and the decorating tools came out, even the older kids couldn’t resist participating. We put some Christmas music on, and sat down at the table together to let the hoiliday decorating party begin. I simply baked and covered with fondant, various shaped sugar cookies ahead of time, and let the kids decorate which ever ones inspired them. It’s an incredibly easy way to create an afternoon of fun and holiday spirit! Most of the prep work I did the day before, to allow the kids to do what they do best, create! The Wilton Food Writers or Americolour Food Colour Writers are a dream to work with for any aspiring cookie artist, and come in a wide variety of colours that stay bright and vibrant on the fondant.

Don’t be intimidated by fondant if you’ve never worked with it before. It honestly couldn’t be any simpler in this recipe. As soon as you take the cookies out of the oven, the fondant shape is set on top. The heat from the hot cookies works its magic, and the fondant sticks, with no other ingredients required! Once the cookies cool, the kids are free to begin designing.

DIY Decorated Christmas Coloring Cookies

Sugar Cookie Ingredients:

*yield is 18-40 cookies depending on size

Wilton Food Writers or Americolour Food Colour Writers

-1 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

-2 cups confectioner sugar, sifted

-4 eggs

-4 tsp vanilla extract

-2 tsp almond extract

-1 tsp kosher salt

-4 1/4 cups flour

-1 tsp baking powder

-2 lbs of fondant, in white (green for trees works well too)

Directions:

1. In a medium bowl whisk the flour, salt and baking powder, set aside. With a mixer, beat butter and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until combined. Add the extracts. Add in the flour mixture, mixing just until combined (careful not to overmix the dough). Wrap dough in saran and refrigerate for 1 1/2 hours.

2. Roll the dough out on the countertop, that has been lightly dusted with confectioners sugar. Roll the dough 1/4″ thickness, especially for larger cutouts, and cut out the desired shape. Hint: Use a paper stencil if you can’t find a cookie cutter in the size you want! Place cutouts on a cookie sheet lined with parchment. Refrigerate the cutouts for 15 minutes. While they are in the fridge, roll out the fondant on the confectioners sugar, and use the same stencil or cutter to cut out the fondant to 1/4″ thickness. Bake cookies at 350, for 12-14 minutes for large cutouts, and 8 minutes for smaller cutouts. Cookies should not be brown on the bottom, or they are slightly over baked. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, cover them with the similar fondant shape. Careful! The cookies are hot! Allow the cookies to cool and decorate with the Food Writers!

Store cookies in an airtight container for a week- if they last that long!

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
