If I could wear flip flops 365 days a year, I would. I love being bare foot. I think I have an aversion to socks. My hubby and I have an ongoing debate. Pretty much every night in bed I take my popsicle toes (seriously… my feet are always freezing at night) and try to stick them between his legs to warm them up. He says to me “put on a pair of socks already!!!” For some reason I can’t sleep with socks on my feet.

Living in Vancouver, the rain capital of the world, going sock”less” all year long is not an option. Because I don’t wear socks for 9 months out of the year, I don’t have very many socks. The other day I was putting on one of my favorite pairs and I noticed that it had a hole in the bottom. I pulled out another pair and… same deal. Most of the socks in my drawer were in pretty rough shape, so I decided it was time to pick up a few pairs.

The next time I was at Walmart I hit up the woman’s sock section and found the cutest selection of socks, including  animal socks! I grabbed a few pairs and brought them home.

The next day I was working on my Shop Handmade Holiday Gift Guide and I found these magical creations.

Handmade Holiday Gift Guide Gifts For Him: Muggle In The Streets Socks from Cali Girl Brand

Muggle In The Streets Socks

Apparently these are known as “If You Can Read This Socks” because the first people who made them put sayings like “If You Can Read This Bring Me A Beer” and “If You Can Read This Bring Me A Glass Of Wine”. I love how DIYers everywhere are putting their own creative spin on them and coming up with their own sayings!

It got the wheels in my mind turning… I thought my new cat and dog socks could use a bit of bling on the bottom! I hit up the Cricut Design Space Facebook Group and started asking questions about putting heat transfer vinyl on the bottom of socks.

A ton of people in the group had tried it, and these were the tips that I took away for doing my own project:

  1. Many people suggested using stretch HTV, though others had great success using Cricut Glitter Iron On. You know how I love my glitter, so it’s pretty obvious what I decided to go with.
  2. Use something to stretch your sock out when you are applying your heat transfer vinyl.
  3. If using socks with texture, make sure you press the heat transfer vinyl until you can see the sock fibers underneath the design.
  4. Use bold letters for best results.
  5. Pre-heat your socks before applying your heat transfer vinyl.

With these tips in mind, I got to it designing my own socks for cat and dog lovers! I’ve included a link to my public cut file in Cricut Design Space below. Feel free to edit it to make it perfect for you or for the person who you are giving them to! These DIY “If You Can Read This Socks” are the perfect handmade gift idea for cat and dog lovers!

Materials:

My Dog and Cat Socks Cut File

-Socks

Glitter iron on or Stretch HTV

Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore

-Iron or  Cricut Easy Press

Regular Grip Cutting Mat

Weeding tools

-Cardboard to use as a sock insert (I used a comic book board)

-Scissors

-Measuring tape (I used the one from the Cricut Sewing Kit

Optional: Cricut Bright Pad, Cricut Iron On Protective Sheet

Directions:

Update: When I had my daughter put on her socks I realized that my text was upside down if she’s sitting with her feet straight out in front of her. If she’s laying on her belly, with her feet up (like she does most of the time) the text is correct. Most “Read Me” socks have the text the opposite way than mine is, so you probably want to flip it. 🙂

Step 1: Measure your socks to determine how big the area where your iron on will be. Resize my Dog and Cat Socks Cut File to fit your socks. Cut the file using your Cricut. Make sure to click the mirror image button on each cutting mat under the “Make It” screen. (Note: You will see two small black rectangles in my cut file. I did these as an overlay for the cat’s eyes.)

Step 2: Weed your vinyl. I love using a weeding tool and my Bright Pad for this. It makes weeding so much easier.

Step 3: Cut out cardboard to fit inside of the socks. You want the cardboard to be approximately the width of a foot. I cut rounded edges where the toe will be so it fits nicer. Your cardboard should be wider than the sock so that it stretches it a bit, the way a foot would.

Step 4: Press your iron ons onto your sock. Preheat your sock by pressing it with your Easy Press or iron first, then position your iron ons onto your socks (see my note above step 1 about the direction of the words. You probably want to flip your socks so the toes are facing up.) Cover with a dish towel or Cricut Protective Sheet and press. Flip your socks over and press again from the back side of your sock. Some people flip their socks inside out and put the cardboard back inside but I found that turning my socks inside out disturbed my iron ons too much. Because the comic book board is thin the heat transferred through it to my iron on

Step 5: Check to see if your iron on is firmly adhered to your sock. If not, repeat the process again until the iron on is adhered to the sock. It shouldn’t lift at all when you are taking off the clear protective plastic.

When iron on is firmly adhered, remove the clear protective plastic and you are done!

Viola! You have adorable DIY dog and cat themed “If You Can Read This” socks! Come up with more fun sayings and DIY all your socks!
