Meet Ruby and Augustus, the newest members of our family. Every time I look into their sweet little faces I can’t help but say “Awwwww!!!” I think these two need their own book “The Slothly Adventures of Ruby and Augustus”. What do you think? Unfortunately Augustus isn’t mine, he was made by my friend, Auntie T, but I still consider him a part of our extended family. 🙂

A couple of months ago I created a post with 27+ Adorable Sewing Projects for Stuffies, Plushies and Stuffed Animals. All of the projects in the post are completely adorable and have stolen my heart, but one project stole Auntie T’s heart in a big way– The Sock Sloth Project! Within hours of publishing the post, I received a text from Auntie T saying “We need to make those sock sloths!!!” My response was “Aren’t they so cute? We totally should make them!”

The next day I received another text from Auntie T “I went to the dollar store and bought brown socks for both of us! When are we having a sock sloth night?!?!” LOL, someone REALLY wanted to make sock sloths, so shortly before Christmas we got together to each make one.

I’ve been wanting to make a sock monkey for a really long time, but I was intimidated to try it. Hand sewing is not my strong suit, and making a sock monkey or sock sloth seemed kind of intimidating to me. One of the things that I want to do in 2017 is step outside of my comfort zone when it comes to crafting and try new things that I haven’t done before. I was glad that Auntie T pushed me outside of my comfort zone. If you are feeling intimidated to try something new, I would definitely recommend calling up a girlfriend and seeing if she wants to do it with you. Auntie T was a bit intimidated by the sewing machine (which I felt comfortable with) but is a whiz at sewing by hand. Together the two of us made a great team! We figured that the worst thing that could happen is that we would have a giant pinterest fail! 😉

There are so many fabulous, talented bloggers out there who have so many wonderful tutorials! With my goal in mind of trying new craft projects, I figure that when I try a project tutorial that is especially great, I should share it with you, along with my experience. I’m going to try to do more of that this year.

Read on for more info about how we made our DIY Sock Sloths!

The evening of our craft night we gathered our supplies, pulled out the sewing machine and computer and pulled up the sock sloth instructions on Cut Out And Keep. I’m definitely what you would call a visual learner. I learn best if I can watch someone doing something and follow along doing it myself. I loved that the instructions on how to make the sock sloth had written photos with instructions AND a video that walked you through how to make it as well. It made the whole process a lot easier.

We had a lot of fun customizing the sock sloths to make them completely our own. We hand cut the faces and eyes, and we also changed the placement of the face slightly from the original (the original had the sloth face on the top, which looks super cute when he’s hanging, but since our kids our going to be cuddling with these a lot and giving them tea parties we decided to put the face in the front).

We originally tried to put strong magnets in the hands and toes to “magically” have the hands and feet “attach” to each other. The socks we used were pretty thick, so while the magnets worked, it wasn’t enough to hang the sloths by. We decided to use my Kam Snap Pliers to put snaps in the hands and feet so the kids could snap the hands and feet open and closed. This makes the sloths easy to hang from trees, the ends of beds, or to give piggy back rides to!

I think my favorite part of this project was designing the face. The slightest change in eye placement and mouth composition make such a big difference in your sloth’s “personality”. I think these two are perfectly suited to be best buds forever.

The project ended up taking us approximately 6 hours BUT we had the kids with us, stopped to make dinner part way through, and had to run to the store to buy more stuffing. We were also sharing a sewing machine, gabbing and enjoying ourselves. I’m also very slow at hand sewing. I’m sure that the next time I make one of these I could make it in 3 hours AND someone who is adept at sewing could probably make one in an hour or two.

I’ll definitely be making a second sock sloth soon. These two both adore Ruby and wish that Augustus was ours too.
