My mom often tells the story of a little girl who she babysat for. The little girl was wearing a dress that her mother had sewn for her and all day long the girl kept walking up to people, spinning around in front of them and saying “My mommy made this dress!”
It became an inside joke of sorts in our family. I grew up in a home with 2 creative parents and our home (and closets) were filled with lots of handmade things. When someone would compliment us on something that one of our parents had made, we’d all look at each other and laugh “My mommy made this dress!”
All joking aside though, I got a lot of pride over “showing off” the things that my parents made for me and I know that my kids feel the same way. My daughter once told me that she loves wearing handmade clothing because it’s like she’s wrapped in love. It’s true, a lot of love goes into making things “from scratch”.
I can’t sew from a pattern to save my life, so my version of handmade clothing is buying a blank shirt and embellishing it myself. This week Bean and I had a “Trendy TShirt Challenge” and the two of us made 3 shirts in one day! Bean helped me design each of the shirts, pick out the colors of glitter iron on, helped me load the Cricut and even helped me iron the design onto the shirts. Afterwards we had a fashion photo shoot where she got to model each of the shirts that we made together.
I know that she got a lot of enjoyment out of making the shirts, that she will wear them proudly and that when someone compliments her on them she’ll say “My mommy and I made this shirt!”
Today I’m going to share all 3 shirt designs with you over the course of the day in 3 posts. It’s going to be a busy day! I hope that you love all of the designs. I think I’m going to have to do a “Trendy Tshirts Challenge” with my son next!
