Yep, you read that right. I lost my DivaCup in Disneyland. Check out why that's such a HUGE deal along with my September recap on Hello Creative Family.

Did I grab you with that title? LOL. That was a text that I sent to my sister a couple of days ago and it seemed so fitting for the title of this post. For months now I’ve gone back and forth about whether to talk to you all about menstrual cups. I know for a lot of people this will be TMI and I TOTALLY get that… so please skip down the page. That’s why I went back and forth deciding whether to talk about this here, but this week made me decide that I needed to. Here’s why…

I’ve been using a menstrual cup for a few years now. When I left my day job and set out to work for myself, I found myself doing social media for several health care practitioners who specialized in natural health. I myself was very interested in natural health, wellness and how we can be more environmentally friendly and ended up getting my Culinary Nutrition Expert Certification because of it. Inspired by the fabulous ladies I was working with, I ditched antiperspirant in favor of natural deodorants, I cleaned up my eating and I started thinking more about what goes on and into my body.

Around that time I also read an article that Meghan Telpner wrote that was originally called Tampax Tampons: Toxic Sticks of Death. Coincidentally, DivaCup also did a big blogger campaign at that time with a bunch of bloggers who I knew. I was not a part of the campaign but after reading what they said I headed to the store and bought myself a DivaCup.

As with many people using a menstrual cup for the first time, it was not love at first… insertion… BUT I quickly got the hang of it and really it made my period so much easier. As this most things that make life easier, I kind of forgot about what life with tampons was like and forgot how amazing using a menstrual cup was. In other words, I took my DivaCup for granted.

Fast forward to this summer… the first time I was tempted to write a post about menstrual cups. We went camping for a week with friends and family and sure enough… Aunt Flo came to visit. It was then that it REALLY hit me how amazing my DivaCup was.

We do a fair amount of hiking when we go camping and during this trip I never, ever had to worry about needing to change a tampon on a trail or whether I was going to leak as I was hiking. I didn’t have to worry about carrying pads or tampons with me on the trail, where I was going to dispose of them, or how often I was going to have to make a bathroom trip to deal with Aunt Flo. I emptied and cleaned my DivaCup once every morning and once in the evening and in between I got to forget that I even had a period. AMAZING right?

I thought so too, but I still hesitated writing about it here. I was worried about “The Overshare.”

Then came this week. I got my period and when I went to get out my DivaCup I realized that I hadn’t seen it since our trip to Disneyland. Now I probably didn’t LITERALLY lose it in Disneyland, but somewhere between there and here it’s gone missing. I texted my sister because she is one of the people who I have converted to menstrual cups. She started with the DivaCup and ended up moving to the Lena Cup and I decided that since I’m buying a new cup I might as well try a different one to see what I think and I can always go back to the DivaCup if I don’t like it as much.

I ordered my new cup online since it’s not available everywhere the way that the DivaCup is and that means that I am back to tampons until it arrives. This week has made me realize just how spoiled I’ve been for the past couple of years.

You have to think about your period when you are wearing a pad or a tampon and that’s something I’ve gotten unaccustomed to.

I went to a workout class and let’s just say… doing jumping jacks was not a pleasant experience. I never would have thought about the fact that I had my period if I was wearing a menstrual cup… It was all that I was thinking about as I did my jumping jacks, bicycle crunches, squats, lunges and planks! I’m not going to go into more details than that but… it was not a pleasant situation.

Also, maybe because I’ve been without tampons for a few years now but… I’m really thinking more about the chemicals in tampons. Let’s just say, I’m feeling the difference DOWN THERE after wearing “Toxic Sticks of Death” this week.

Using a menstrual cup during my period has made my life so much better. Probably for my health, but more noticeably for ease and happiness. I’m a set it and forget it type of girl and wearing a menstrual cup lets my period be no big deal. I wanted to share that with you, because I hope it will make a few of your periods easier as well. I paid for my DivaCup, I’m paying for my menstrual cup that’s coming in the mail… but I thought I’d share the love.

If you are interested in purchasing a menstrual cup, I’ll share a few affiliate links (that means that I get a small percentage of the sale if you chose to buy one). I don’t think the same menstrual cup is the perfect cup for everyone so here are a few that I’ve heard are good. You can find the one that’s right for you.

DivaCup (the cup I started with… until I lost it in Disneyland.)

Lena Cup (the cup my sister swears by.)

Blossom Cup (the cup I ended up buying based on reviews since the Lena Cup isn’t available in Canada)

Lunette Cup (another cup I’ve heard good things about)

Athena Cup (one more cup I’ve heard good things about)

Menstrual cups in general (so you can make your own decision based on reviews.)

Feel free to ask me any menstrual cup questions you may have. I’m happy to answer them based on my own experience… and now onto this month’s recap.

Favorite Memories-

This guy. You might remember from last month’s recap post that Turtle was having a really hard time with kindergarten transition. I’m happy to update and say that we are on the other side of things. He’s back to being his happy, social, self and I am SO HAPPY. You guys, it was brutal. I had to wear my sunglasses to school so he couldn’t see me crying as they pulled him off of me. I had me leave to the sound of his sobs and howls which was so hard for this mama bear. BUT we did it. One of the teachers at the school decided the best bet was for them to grab him off of me and hold him while screamed and cried and I escaped. We did it for a few days and each day his crying time was shorter and shorter. One day he said to me “Mom, I think I got this. I’m not going to cry today.” And he didn’t. I’m so proud of him.

Thank you so much to everyone who sent love, input and kind thoughts. It really helped me get through it.

Turtle also started gymnastics and soccer in September and is showing the same excitement and enthusiasm at those classes as he now has at kindergarten.

By the way… 5 year old boys playing soccer is one of my favorite things ever. The silliness, the energy, the floppy, crazy “puppiness” of them. I love it. The photo above was taken at a post soccer, Tim Hortons, Mommy Son treat night.

The relationship between these two. There’s nothing that I love more than waking to see these two snuggled together. It makes my heart so happy. Even though they bicker like crazy, I know that they always have each other’s back. It’s really neat to see their relationship evolve now that they are at school together. She was his cheerleader when he was having a hard time with adjusting to kindergarten and that makes me well up with pride.

My gorgeous nephew’s 1st birthday. How did a year go by already? I remember the day he was born like it was yesterday. I don’t think I ever wrote about it here but I left to get to the hospital very early in the morning. My sister lives in the US so I needed my passport to cross the border. I grabbed it in the dark, just quickly sneaking a peek to make sure it was mine. When I got to the border I discovered it was Bean’s passport. Somehow in the dark I thought that her picture was mine. I don’t know how I did it, maybe it was my panic and tears, but I convinced the border guard to let me get through the border without my passport. I’m still so thankful to him.

This curly haired cutie turned 1 this month and I feel so blessed that he was added to our family this year. I think he may be the happiest, smiliest baby I have ever met. The kid never cries!!! I can’t wait to see how the next year transforms him.

Oh and while we are on the subject of birthdays… how amazing is this cake my mom made? Isn’t it incredible?!?! True talent friends!

Well that wraps up my September recap. So….

Tell me… Do you have any menstrual cup questions? What book should I read next? Isn’t the cake my mom made amazing? What podcast or Netflix show are you loving that I need to listen to/watch? I love to hear from you so drop a comment below!

Haha I wonder where it ended up! I love my DivaCup and would never go back!

  2. I’m personally all about the Lena Cup! It’s cheaper than the Diva Cup, and just seems to work better too. It is indeed available in Canada-have a look on Amazon 🙂

    1. Hi Jackie,

I can’t seem to find the Lena Cup on Amazon.ca… just amazon.com. Are you seeing it on the .ca site? Nice to see another person who is a Lena Cup fan. I ended up with the Blossom Cup and it’s been great over the last couple of months. I’m so glad I made the switch to menstrual cups.

Thank you so much for visiting!

      Best Wishes,

      Crystal
