DIY “Say Yes To Adventure” Shirt Made On The Cricut- Perfect for camping!

I’m a very lucky lady. I have a husband who loves and supports me, two children who challenge me daily and are the lights of my life, and I have a circle of female friends who are my cheerleaders and who’s friendship I couldn’t live without. 

Working from home can be an isolating situation. When people ask me if I miss working in an office from 9-5, I usually say that working for myself is one of the best decisions I ever made, but that I definitely miss the social aspect of working in an office. 

Since Bean turned 1, she (and then Turtle when he turned 1) have been taken care of 5 days a week by one of my best friends, Karen. When I first met Karen and her daughter in an infant sign language class, I had no clue what a huge part of our lives they would become. I had mentioned to the instructor that I was looking for a daycare situation for when Bean turned 1 and the instructor told me that Karen, who was an ECE, was planning on opening a daycare. The timing worked out perfectly and over the 7 years that my kids were in her care, I thanked my lucky stars daily that I had met Karen.

Karen loves my kids like they are her own, my children call her “Auntie Karen” and she truly made my kids feel like they were going to their Aunt’s house every day they went to daycare. She taught my children the things that I didn’t have the patience to teach them, she took them on grand adventures, and she wasn’t afraid to put my kids in their place when they were acting up, but in a way that my kids still knew they were loved. 

Karen’s kids and my kids, so close in age, act more like siblings than friends and because I saw Karen twice a day and she has such a good heart, she became “my person”. 

Karen and her family moved away in September and while my heart broke to say “goodbye for now”, I was so happy and excited for them that they made a life decision that was such a wonderful choice for their family. They moved away from the hustle and bustle of the city and decided to “Say yes to adventure”, moving to the island, living near the beach, and incorporating their love for the outdoors into their everyday life. 

For Christmas this year, I decided to design shirts for Karen and her kids with the motto that I thought fit their family’s life so well “Say Yes To Adventure”. Today I’m going to share with you the cut file and teach you how to make it. I hope that it inspires you to “Say yes to adventure” in your own life, whether that means planning a camping trip this summer, going for a hike or making a big move like Karen and her family did!

If you’ve spent much time at Hello Creative Family, it will come as no surprise that I love my Cricut. I use it constantly and often wonder how my craft life survived before I had one! 

One of the questions I get asked a lot about my Cricut is “Do you have to use cartridges with your Cricut?”

The answer is no. I don’t own a single cartridge for my Cricut. 

Cricut Explore was designed to work with Cricut Design Space, rather than as a stand-alone machine. However, you can still use cartridges you own with your Cricut Explore. Simply link your cartridges to your account through Cricut Design Space using the cartridge port on your Cricut Explore machine.

I think that eliminating cartridges is a HUGE win for the machine. With a subscription to Cricut Access, you have unlimited access to 30,000+ images, 1000+ projects and 370+ fonts and you don’t have to store all of those cartridges! Amazing right? 

The images that I used in my post today were all found within Cricut Access. The words are in Robinson font and Bobby Script Font. See my post here on how to upload the words to Cricut Design Space. 

DIY Say Yes To Adventure Shirt

Materials:

– Cricut Explore
– Standard Grip Cutting Mat
– Cricut Iron-On in your favorite colors (I used Iron On Black for my husband’s shirt and Foil Iron On in Rose Gold for my daughter’s shirt .)
-Iron
-T-Shirt, Long Sleeved Shirt or Tank Top

Directions:

Step 1: Open my Say Yes To Adventure design file in Cricut Design Space, size the design to the size that you would like it for your shirt. 

Step 2: Add Say Yes To Adventure in the font that you would like to use. Here are images of each of the words that I used on my shirts that you can upload to Cricut Design Space if you would like. If you need some pointers on how to do that you can use the instructions in this post. 

Step 3: Select each element of your design (on a Mac you do this by clicking each design element in the list on the right hand side of the screen while pressing the control button), and then click “Attach” under layers so that your design cuts all in one piece, correctly laid out.

 

Step 4: Click Go to be brought to the cut menu. Make sure to click the “Mirror Image for Iron On” box so that your image cuts in reverse. Set your Cricut to the appropriate material depending on what kind of iron on you are using for your shirt. Follow the prompts on the screen to cut your vinyl. 

Step 5: Weed away the “negative” part of the design that won’t be used on your shirt, and then iron on shirt according to the instructions for your Iron On Material.
