finished modge podge spice jars from SewCreativeBlog.comThis Christmas my goal was to give handmade gifts. I have a shop on Etsy (Lilikoi Lane) and wanted to support other handmade artisans as well as make some gifts myself. Among the gifts, Turtle got a Organic Bamboo Velour Bunny Lovey from Bright Life Toys. Bean got a Hobbie Horse from Manely Recycled . Hubs and I got matching sets of rings with Bean and Turtles names and dates of birth for the ring finger on our right hand from Moo and Bear. Stocking stuffers were Unicorn Farts Lip Balm from Long Winter Soap Company. (Yum!!!) I made Turtle a rag quilt and for most of the women in my life I made infinity scarves (tutorial for both of those coming soon!)

Where I ran into problems buying handmade was for my Dad, my sister’s boyfriend Jimmy and my friend Danielle’s boyfriend Garf. All three are foodies. Garf is in a battle against foods with preservatives (as we all should be) and my Dad is watching his salt intake. Danielle had told me that she loves Taco Seasoning but that Garf hates all of the “other stuff” that is in the packaged kind you buy at the store. So for Danielle and Garf I made homemade Taco Seasoning and for my Dad and Jimmy I made homemade Lemon Pepper, Island Spice Mix and Ragin’ Cajun Spice Mix. I wanted the gifts to have a bit more of a handmade element to them so I made Fabric Covered Mason Jar Spice Jars. Here is a tutorial on how to make them.

What You Need:

Supplies for Modge Podge Spice Jar-Modge Podge

-Fabric

-Scissors or a Rotary Cutter

-A Sponge Brush

-A Work Surface that can get modge podge on it (I use a plate)

-A Ruler

-Something to put your modge podge in (I use a Chinese Tea Cup)

-A Mason Jar (I use a small sized one for spice jars but you could really use any size that you desire)

Strip of fabricStep 1: Measure your mason jar. First measure all the way around and add approximately a half inch for the fabric to overlap. Then measure from the lip where your fabric will start (right below where the lid screws onto the jar) to the center of the bottom of the jar. Cut out a piece of fabric in these dimensions. Mine was 8 1/2″ by 2 3/4″.

Cover jar in modge podge

Step 2: Using your sponge brush coat the sides of the mason jar with modge podge.

Wrap fabric around jar

Step 3: Wrap the fabric around the mason jar, you should have a slight overlap where the fabric meets.

Fold fabric over bottom

Step 4: Coat the bottom of the jar with modge podge, begin folding down the fabric onto the bottom of the jar the way you might wrap a Christmas present. Put modge podge on the fabric before folding another section of the fabric on top of it.

apply thin coats of modge podge

Step 5: Cover the fabric with a thin layer of modge podge. Allow to dry. Repeat until you have the desired effect you are trying to achieve. I put on approximately 5 layers of modge podge.

Make sure you let the gift recipient know that these can not be submerged into water. To clean wipe with a damp cloth.
