Do you sew? If so you need the Cricut Maker! Cricut's new machine is the best thing that has happened in the sewing world in a long time. This article breaks down the many features, shares some awesome Cricut Maker made sewing projects and counts down the many reasons why you need a Cricut Maker in your craft room! The Cricut Maker lets you spend less time doing what you don't like (cutting) and doing more of what you love-- Sewing and making easy, gorgeous projects and handmade gifts!

A few of you observant folks probably noticed that at the end of July/beginning of August I was in Salt Lake City for the Cricut product launch. If you spend much time here, it will come as no surprise that I love Cricut. I’ve been using a Cricut Explore for 3 years now and it is by far the one item in my craft room that I use the most. It has a permanent spot on my craft room table and never gets tucked away because I use it so often. This week alone I have used my Cricut to make a birthday card for a friend, planner stickers for my Happy Planner and and a gold glitter iron on applique of my daughter’s name for the back of her pencil pouch.

My Cricut has allowed me to take the ideas I imagine in my head and bring them to life.

For the past 3 years I’ve been able to use my Cricut for almost every crafty hobby I have– from making tags and labels for my baking and canning, to making stickers and pockets for my planner, to paper crafting, to designing shirts. One area that I haven’t used my Cricut for much though is for my sewing– and that has all changed with the Cricut Maker.

As I sat in the audience at the Cricut product launch listening to Cricut’s CEO, Ashish Aurora speak, I wondered what he could say about a new machine that would make me love it more than my current machine. Then he said two little words that as a sewer made me lose my mind– Rotary Blade.

You guys, I may have squealed when he said those words. Especially when I heard that all of the seat cushions we were sitting on, made from approximately 100 different types of fabric, were all cut using the Cricut Maker!

There were a ton of other amazing features that Ashish and his team covered including a knife cut blade which cuts balsa wood (AMAZING), a charging port so that you can charge your device while you cut (FABULOUS) and 10 times the force when cutting as compared to the Cricut Explore which basically means it’s a commercial grade cutting machine at a super awesome price (SO COOL).

This video gave me the chills, because really, don’t we all want to be makers? The Cricut Maker brings that goal to life!

The Cricut Maker can do EVERYTHING that the Cricut Explore Air 2 can do and then some, so if you sew and/or are interested in cutting wood, leather and other thicker materials on your machine then the Cricut Maker is probably the machine for you! Plus with the adaptive tool technology in this machine new cutting tools will be released in the future that we’ll be able to use with a simple software update, instead of having to buy a new machine.

Here is a breakdown of the different Cricut machines and what they can do. Honestly you can’t go wrong with any of them, but if you sew or want to cut wood or leather I’d highly suggest investing in the Cricut Maker:

As I mentioned above, the rotary cutter was the big jaw drop moment for me. In my humble opinion it was the star of the show. Each Cricut Maker comes with a rotary blade included. Being able to load up your machine with a rotary cutter and fabric and have it do all the cutting for you is revolutionary. The Cricut Maker allows you to cut your fabric in the fraction of the time giving us more time to do what we love– sew!

Two brands we know, love and trust coming together to bring in the new age of sewing! SnapMat-

I can hear some of you saying already “I don’t think this will work for me. I’m very particular about where the fabric design lays on pieces that I’m cutting out” Prepare to have your mind blown with SnapMat! While using your iOS device, lay your fabric on your cutting mat and use the SnapMat function to take a photo of the fabric on your mat. You will then be able to see your fabric and cutting mat in Design Space and you can position your cuts EXACTLY where you want them. So amazing! You can see how I positioned my butterfly cut below. This function is also fabulous for when you are using fabric scraps!

Less Waste-

Every sewing project available in Cricut Access is designed to utilize the fabric as efficiently as possible. That means it will cut each piece close together getting you the most bang for your fabric buck. If you want to position your pieces yourself you are still free to, but each mat will automatically load to cut with the least amount of waste as possible.

Cuts Every Fabric-

At the product launch I heard people say that the Cricut Maker had been tested on 100 different types of fabric and that it was able to cut every single one of them. There was a wall of fabric samples there that had all been cut using the machine– from taffeta, to sequined fabric, to lace, to quilting cotton, to felt.

I don’t think that all 100 fabrics are listed in this Cricut Maker Cutting Materials list, but man there are a lot of them.

Take a peek here at what the Cricut Maker can cut.

Washable Fabric Pen

If patterns confuse you (like they do me) you are going to LOVE this feature. Cricut has a washable fabric pen that fits into the A slot of the machine. Many of the sewing projects available in Cricut Access will have the option of having your pieces be numbered using the pen and have your seam allowances drawn onto the fabric as well. This means you’ll be able to sew up all of those cute projects by just following the dotted line!

Fabric Cutting Mats

Cricut has created a cutting mat that is specifically made for fabric. The mat is available in a standard 12X12 inch size as well as an extended 12X24 inch size. Cricut came up with a new formula for this mat making it scent free (those who have used Cricut mats in the past will know what I mean.)  The mat grips whatever fabric you throw at it, and you don’t need to clean the fabric threads off of the mat, the rotary cutter will cut right through them next time!

Bonded Fabric Blade

If you cut a lot of bonded fabric, fabric with an iron on backer or want to cut very intricate cuts out of fabric then you will want this blade! Cricut’s has created a bonded fabric blade that many sewers will want to add to their collection!

Cricut Sewing Kit

While many advanced sewers might already have everything in this kit in their sewing box, I think it’s pretty cool that Cricut thought to put everything that you need to start sewing in one handy, affordably priced bundle. The Cricut Maker makes it so easy for anyone to start sewing, so it’s awesome that they are making everything available in a one stop shop!

This an amazing machine! I got mine for Christmas and can’t get enough of it!! I wish Joanne Fabrics would have more accessories in stock. I’m also very excited about pre cut fabric for the mats.

  5. I like your review and think it’s put together nicely but I feel like you are leaving out one extremely crucial point which could be misleading for a large subset of sewers; garment sewers. That is, this machine is NOT going to be good for anyone who primarily sews garments and wishes to cut those types of patterns. Why? – the cutting area is way too small (at 11.5″ x 23.5″) for most garments, although, you might be able to cut newborn onsies or other small pieces such as baby shorts or infant tees. I was really disappointed to discover this. Searching for ideas I thought, maybe you can cut on the fold which would open up more possibilities for garment cutting with the cricut maker but the company doesn’t recommend cutting on the fold. You have to stick the fabric to their adhesive mat before cutting with the machine, so folding the fabric over would allow for too much movement while cutting. Since you are more experienced than I, I would love to hear if you have any ideas or solutions that might work.

    1. Hi Jess,

You are absolutely 100% correct. The one downfall of the Cricut Maker is that you are limited to cutting fabric the size of the largest cutting mat. I personally don’t sew garments so it hasn’t been an issue for me as of yet. That being said, as far as I know the Maker is the first machine available to the general population that can cut out your patterns for you. One of the things that I love about Cricut is that they are constantly taking suggestions from the public and working on making those “wishes” come true in their future technology. Fingers crossed that one day there is a larger Cricut Maker that can cut larger pieces of fabric for garments too!

Thank you so much for visiting the site and for giving your input!

    2. So glad you said this!! I was thinking of buying one because I sew…. And cutting is not the fun part to me…. But I mostly make clothes so im glad I read your review! Thank you:)

  6. Informative and interesting Blog! Beautifully written, as usual, I like the post. Thank you so much for nice sharing with us. Keep posting!

I’m not sure if you’re still responding, but I’m struggling…I’m trying to figure out what tools I should purchase for the maker so that I can use it for quilting projects. I know that the maker comes standard with some items. What are the other “must haves,” not niceties, but actually necessities for sewers? Thanks!

    1. Hi Tonya,

Thank you so much for visiting Hello Creative Family! I actually just did a Cricut Maker Reader FAQ that has this exact question answered! You can find it here: https://hellocreativefamily.com/cricut-maker-faq-reader-questions-answered/

If you sew and have a Cricut Maker then chances are you already have the things you need (the rotary blade and the fabric mat). The thing I’d recommend the most as an add on is the 12X24 inch fabric cutting mat so you can do bigger projects. I share links in the post that I linked to so that you can find it easily. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

      Best Wishes,

      Crystal
