COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS DAY 18 GIFTS FOR ARTISTIC KIDS:
Gift Idea #1- Skwooshi
I remember being a kid and LOVING playdough. I wanted to play with it all the time, but my mom only let us play with it on occasion. I remember wondering why playing with playdough had to be such a rare occurance… Now I’m a mom and I get it. Playdough is messy! You end up with pieces of playdough mashed in your carpet, or the lid doesn’t get sealed quite right and your playdough dries up. If you’re like me and are seeking a playdough alternative have I got the product for you. Skwooshi!
A magazine I subscribe to recently arrived in my mailbox with a sample of Skwooshi in it. I left the Skwooshi at my desk and haven’t been able to stop playing with it. If I’m trying to find the right words for an email, I mindlessly reach for the Skwooshi and start playing with it. If someone comes over to my desk to pick my brain, I play with the Skwooshi as I brainstorm. I love it… and Bean loves it even more.
What is Skwooshi? Skwooshi is the cool new compound that stretches, molds and shapes into amazing detail with no mess and will never dry out. The only limit is your imagination for all of the fun things you can make with Skwooshi. Here is a video of Skwooshi in action:
As much as I love the product I wondered if the mess free claim was real… I decided to put it to the test and try to rub it into my carpet. Yes I am brave… or foolish. But honestly I really wanted to know how easy this stuff was to clean up. I could tell from playing with it that if little pieces were dropped on the carpet it would be easy enough to vaccuum up… but what if you really tried to mash it in? I taped this video of the result.
Skwooshi is fabulous and would make a great gift for creative kids. Head on out and buy a
package or two and put it to the test!
Gift Idea #2- Magna Color
I was so excited when I heard about this fun new toy. Bean loves to trace things. She frequently takes the stencils that I made for my Lilikoi Lane shirts and traces them on pieces of paper. The basic concept of the Magna Color is that is an art board that you can slide provided stencils into. It comes with 4 colored pens with dots in them that stick to the magnetic drawing board. You can then trace around the stencil with different colored dots. There is even an app that you can download to your phone or ipad that brings the stencils to life in 3d.
That’s all cool enough… but I love that you can take it even further creatively. One of the things that we love to do is slide photographs into the Magna Color. Bean can then “draw on” the pictures with her magnetic pen. Another option is to have no stencil on the board and then you are left with a “blank page” that you can draw your own magnetic pictures on.
One of my fears with the Magna Color was cleanup. Sure it’s fun to draw with pens filled with dots that stick to the magnetic board… but what do you do when the pens are empty and you have to get the dots back in them? Magna Color has a sweeper that you use to sweep all of the dots to the top of the board. They then fall into the back of the Magna Color. Attach the pens to their compartment on the back, give the board a shake, shake, shake and the dots are sorted by their color and shape into the appropriate pen. Click them back out and you are free to get creative all over again!
The Magna Color is a super fun toy to encourage artistic play on it’s own or augmented
with the Magna Color App.
I hope you enjoyed today’s edition of the Sew Creative Countdown to Christmas. I’ll be back tomorrow with the last day of my Countdown To Christmas.
Tell me… Do you have any artistic kids in your life? What are some of your favorite toys for little artists?
*A big thank you to Skwooshi and Magna Color for sending products for the kids and I to test out. All thoughts and opinions on this blog are 100% my own. Both Skwooshi and Magna Color are gifts that I would love to give (and receive).
