I am a Pacific Northwest girl through and through. My fondest childhood memories involve spending summer vacation on the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington and being one with nature. I remember hiking around mountain lakes looking for salamanders, making my way down forest paths searching for osprey nests and hoping we’d be lucky enough to see the baby osprey take their first flight and spending countless hours exploring tide pools, hunting for treasures from the sea and hopping from one piece of driftwood to another.

My love for nature has only gotten stronger now that I’m an adult and I get so much pleasure from watching my children explore the same coastlines and forests that I did when I was little.

We have family friends that moved to Vancouver Island almost two years ago who now spend almost every single day exploring the beaches of the Pacific Northwest to see what the sea has revealed.

On one of our trips to visit them I noticed a piece of driftwood sitting in their garage that called my name so strongly that I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every evening when we would return from our day’s adventures I would eyeball that piece of driftwood and imagine what DIY project I could make with it. On our final day visiting, my friend saw me staring at it and asked me if I wanted it. I asked her if she was sure, she said yes and said that the ocean was always providing them with new treasures. I promised to turn it into something amazing.

That piece of driftwood sat in my garage for over a year, calling my name each time I walked past it. In my head I kept envisioning a succulent garden but was leery about drilling holes into it that were big enough to support the root structure.

Last month when I was at SNAP I got to visit with my friend Jamie from Floracraft. As I was thinking about all of the incredible products that Floracraft makes it hit me that they sell beautiful faux succulents. I told Jamie about my idea and within a week a huge box of succulents had arrived at my door.

When I first started laying the faux succulents out I wasn’t sure how full I would want my DIY Faux Succulent Driftwood Planter to be. As I held one succulent after another up to the driftwood I realized that I wanted the gorgeous driftwood to show and for each succulent to truly be a statement piece so you could see how beautiful each one was.

Floracraft’s faux succulents truly are stunning. I have had a jar of them on my desk for a couple of years now and people constantly think they are real. Every once in awhile I give them a quick dusting but other than that they are maintenance free.

Step 2: If you have natural holes and cracks in your driftwood stick the stems of the succulents into the holes, gluing if you want them extra secure (I chose not to glue my project so I could change the succulents if I wanted to). Use your drill and a drill bit to drill holes where you want succulents to go.
