Favorite Things Friday- Meet Vancouver Jewelry Designer Coral + Cloud Plus a Giveaway!

In the latest Favorite Things Friday, Hello Creative Family interviews Miko from Coral + Cloud and gives away a piece of jewelry

Hi friends! Today I am excited to introduce you to one of my Creative Girl Crushes! Last summer I was hanging out at Collage Collage and fell in love with a necklace that Erin, the owner (another one of my Creative Girl Crushes) was wearing. It was brightly colored, hung on a necklace made out of recycled tshirt, had big, chunky, geometric beads and was a total statement necklace. I loved it. Usually my jewelry choices are more understated (I wear a lot of hand stamped jewelry) but this necklace was divine. This was the type of jewelry that creative gals wear! 

I asked Erin where she got it and she told me about a local, Vancouver jewelry designer named Miko who owns Coral + Cloud. The moment I got home I looked up Miko’s shop and started stalking following her on instagram. 

Miko’s instagram feed makes me want to be a better photographer and to live in a whiter, brighter, more colorful world.

Fast forward to a couple of months ago and Karen and I were getting ready for our Hello Creative Family photo shoot. Karen and I had spent the day working with our graphic designer, pulling together the color pallete for the site, discussing the pros and cons of a bunch of different hex colors and brainstorming the concept behind our upcoming photo shoot. I got home from the meeting, opened instagram and saw this:

Beautiful beads in shades of pink and aqua just like the shades that we had spend the day discussing. It was time to make my Creative Girl Crush known! Karen and I had to have matching Coral + Cloud necklaces for our photo shoot!

Miko was kind enough to whip us up two of her pink, blue and grey ombre necklaces with just a few day’s notice. And Karen and I wore them in our photo shoot!

I love Miko’s jewelry so much, and wanted to know more about her and her creative process. Miko was kind enough to answer a few questions about creativity for me to share here on the site. 

HCF: Do you have any rituals that get you in the creative mood?

Miko: Honestly, no! At the moment I don’t have time for rituals. 😉 I do most of my work in the evenings after Saya goes to bed, so there’s definitely a routine but I wouldn’t say it’s a ritual. I put her to bed and ever since she’s moved to a big girl bed, she wants me to sit on the edge of her bed until she falls asleep. But she doesn’t want me looking at her! So she tells me to get on my phone, haha! So I try to catch up with instagram, then sneak out of her room, get the paint and beads set up, and get to work!
 
HCF: Have you always been creative? Was/is your family  creative?
 
Miko: I think I’ve always been pretty creative. In high school I would spend summers making beaded jewelry, though I have no idea where any of the finished products are now. In university I was in a band and we would make our own 7″ and CD covers. I made little felted sleeves with embroidered details for one of our CDs. And yes, my family is very creative! My dad is a self-published poet and currently spends much of his free time wood working using Japanese hand tools. My mom is a singer and plays taiko (large Japanese drums).
 
HCF: Tell us about your creative space in your home?
 
Miko: Sadly, my creative space is currently a mess. I share our office space with my musician husband, so half of the room looks like a music studio, and half of it looks like a bead factory. Sometimes we battle over space, but usually it’s kind of nice having an office mate so to speak, even though each of us is working on our craft solo. Sometimes it’s looking pretty organized, but having just had a sale in my shop, it looks like a tornado hit! I’m looking forward to fully re-organizing very soon. And when I have a bunch of painting to do at once, I’ll often spread out at the coffee table in the living room instead. And when I worked on my mobile installation for Collage Collage, I used almost the whole house! Had to hang them on a clothes rack in the middle of the hallway, and on our guitar stand, and anything else I could find.
 
HCF: How do you encourage creativity in your daughter?
 
Miko: I don’t think it’s even something that needs encouragement with her! Kids are amazingly creative, it’s so fantastic to see how it develops. She is always wanting to do arts and crafts activities, and also particularly loves making pretend food and playing restaurant. Being a foodie helps. And I don’t know if it’s correlated, but we don’t generally give her any screen time unless she is sick or it’s a special occasion. She’s stuck with the toys she has!
