Hi crafty friends! It’s the third Thursday of the month and you know what that means! It’s time for a brand new free SVG cut file collection! This month’s my friends and I created Welcome Mat SVG files!

If you’ve been following Hello Creative Family for awhile now, you may know that this isn’t the first time I’ve created cut files that work great for door mats! If you are wanting to make a ton of door mats I suggest that you check out these posts as well:

Welcome mats are one of those things that I never really thought I’d be able to make with a Cricut before I owned one, now though it’s one of my favorite craft projects. I even have a doormat project in my book The Unofficial Book of Handmade Cricut Crafts.

I get asked a TON about how to make welcome mats, so today I’m going to share step by step tutorial of my favorite way to make them.

So pull out your Cricut Explore, Cricut Maker, Cricut Joy or Silhouette Cameo and get ready for some crafting fun!

Make sure you read all the way to the bottom of this post to find my friends free doormat svg files.

How To Make A DIY Doormat With Your Cricut

How To Make a Door Mat Using Your Cricut

Just like every crafter has their favorite way to store their craft supplies, every Cricut crafter has their favorite way to make door mats. My favorite way is the freezer paper stencil method. It’s inexpensive and you can make a ton of stencils out of one roll. I also know people who use vinyl or HTV to make their stencils.

For paint, I prefer to use spray paint rather than a brush, but I have friends who love using acrylic craft paint with stencil brushes too. I suggest experimenting, having fun and deciding which way is your favorite for making your own personalized door mat!

Materials:

Cricut Machine preferably one from the Cricut Explore Air or Cricut Maker family

-Freezer paper

-Scissors, or rotary cutter

-Cut file

-Blank coir doormat (I get my coir mats from Ikea)

-Measuring tape

12×24” regular grip cutting mat

Fine-tip blade

Cricut EasyPress or iron

-Spray paint

-Optional: Brayer, parchment paper, painters tape and clear spray paint

Directions:

Step 1: Cut a piece of freezer paper 12 inches by 24 inches.

Step 2: Log into Cricut Design Space and upload the your cut file. Insert onto your canvas.

Measure the area of the doormat where you want your design to be, then size your design accordingly. Do this by clicking on the design and using either the arrow that appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the design, or use the Size tool in the top toolbar.

Step 3: Measure the area of the doormat where you want your design to be, then size your design accordingly. Do this by clicking on the design and using either the arrow that appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the design, or use the Size tool in the top toolbar.

Click Make It. Position your “design” where you would like for it to cut from your freezer paper. For my doormat I wanted my “Hello” in the bottom right hand corner, so I put my “Hello” down in the corner of my freezer paper. The rest of your freezer paper is going to act as a spray shield so that you don’t get spray paint on the rest of your doormat.

Step 5: When it comes time to select your cutting material, you will need to create a custom material setting for freezer paper. To do this select Material Settings from the bottom of the materials list. You will then see a slider where you can select the blade pressure. Change it to 135. Select “off” for the Multi Cut and “Fine Point Blade” for your Blade Type. Don’t forget to name the material Freezer Paper. Once you have done this once, you’ll be able to select Freezer Paper from the dropdown list of materials.

Step 6: Lay your freezer paper shiny side down on your 12×24 inch cutting mat. Make sure that the freezer paper is really pushed into the mat. I like to do this using a brayer tool. Load your mat into the cutting machine and have your Cricut cut.

Weed your freezer paper. You will want to keep the freezer paper that surrounds the word as well as the pieces from inside the loops of the letters, so for my Hello design that meant the loops inside the h, e, l, l, o.

Heat your Cricut EasyPress to 300F. Carefully peel the freezer paper off of the cutting mat and lay it on top of the doormat in the area where you would like to stencil. Make sure you add the centers of your letters. Press the freezer paper to the doormat using your Cricut EasyPress, heating for approximately 30 second.

Make sure you add the centers of your letters. Press the freezer paper to the doormat using your Cricut EasyPress, heating for approximately 30 second.

Step 9: Now it’s time to paint! You may want to cover the rest of your doormat with parchment paper to protect it from overspray. Following the instructions on your bottle of spray paint, use the spray paint to paint your design. Allow to dry and then decide if your letters are dark enough, if they aren’t add another layer of spray paint.

Optional: Spray a layer of clear protective spray paint on top to seal your doormat.

Pro-Crafter Tip: Door mats are so fun to make and the possibilities are endless, however for the best success, I suggest sticking with large, bulky fonts and designs as opposed to thin, delicate fonts and designs. The bulkier designs work better with freezer paper and spray paint.
