There is just something about gardening that fills the soul in a way nothing else quite can.
Hands in the dirt. Face in the sun. Heart happy.
That simple feeling is exactly what inspired this month’s free SVG design for our Gardening SVG Blog Hop.
But my love of gardening didn’t start in a picture-perfect backyard…
From Forest Kid to Garden Dreamer
When I was a kid, we lived in the middle of the forest. We were surrounded by towering trees and endless nature. It was beautiful and magical, very much an enchanted forest kind of childhood.
But the trees blocked out so much of the sun.
Our landscaping fit the woodland vibe perfectly, but it wasn’t really a garden. And I always wanted a garden.
When Rob and I bought our very first place together, a ground-floor condo in Burnaby, BC, one of the things I loved most was that it had a front yard. I remember the magnolia tree blooming in the spring, and I wasted no time heading out to buy tulip and daffodil bulbs. I was determined to finally have my garden.
Even if it was small. Even if it was just a start.
Growing a Garden (And a Family)

Our next home was a townhouse with a teeny tiny yard that didn’t leave much room for gardening. Thankfully there was a community garden nearby. Rob and I immediately put our names on the waiting list for a plot.
Right around the time we got our community garden plot, we also welcomed Bella into the world.
I absolutely loved bringing her to the garden. Pointing out the different vegetables. Letting her taste things straight off the vine. Feeding her vegetables grown from our own soil felt so special.

Later, we moved to another townhouse. There wasn’t much actual earth to plant in, but there was plenty of room for container gardening. That space became our experiment zone.
We tried growing everything you could imagine:
- Tomatoes
- Carrots
- Zucchini
- Beans
- Snap peas
- Ground cherries
- Raspberries
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Cilantro
- Corn
- Watermelon

Some summers were wildly successful. Others… not so much. But experimenting with the kids and trying to grow their wishlist vegetables each year was such a joy.
Living the Garden Dream in Hawaii
Now we live in Hawaii on a property with an acre of land.
An acre.
After years of small yards and containers, it feels like absolute heaven. The weather is spring and summer all year long, and we have so much space to experiment and plant.
Every morning when I’m out in the garden, watering, harvesting, or checking on new growth, I feel it.
Hands in the dirt.
Face in the sun.
Heart happy.
And that is exactly where this SVG idea came from.
