I still remember decorating the Christmas tree when I was a kid. I grew up in a house in the middle of the forest, and during my early childhood, we would cut down our Christmas trees from the woods surrounding our house. I had no concept of what trees were “too big”, and my Dad often satisfied my childhood dreams of having a huge Christmas tree. My parent’s house has a cathedral ceiling in the centre of the house where we used to set up our Christmas tree. One year, we chopped down a tree that my dad had to rig up a pulley system to get into the house and standing upright. The tree was over 20 feet tall. I still think of this tree every time we go to chop down our yearly Christmas tree.
My dad would put up the lights on our Christmas tree, my mom would unwrap all of the ornaments, and my sister and I would decorate the tree. Our Christmas tree never looked like one out of a magazine, our ornaments weren’t coordinated, we never considered decorating our tree with a theme… but looking back I realize our tree did have a theme each year– Love.
The Christmas tree of my childhood, and my Christmas tree now that I’m an adult, have a lot in common. The trees are filled with memories. Each year my mom would buy my sister and I one Christmas tree ornament to help us remember the year. This is a tradition my husband and I have continued– as a family, we chose one Christmas tree ornament to purchase each year. The Christmas trees of my past and present have always been filled with handmade ornaments. I think it’s so much fun looking back at Christmas ornaments that you have made with your own hands, and to giggle at the ones that didn’t turn out so great, and celebrate the artistic genius that went into the ones that are awesome.
Today I’m sharing with you 27+ Christmas ornaments that kids can help craft. I encourage you to spend some time this holiday season, creating items for your Christmas tree… because I know that at the same time you will be creating memories.
Here’s to having a handmade, homemade, heart-made Christmas!
