Christmas is just around the corner, but there is still time to visit your favorite bookstore or shop on Amazon for these amazing books and craft kits that are perfect for creative kids! I’m the mama of a 10 year old and a 6 year old. Each time that birthdays and Christmas roll around I struggle as friends and family members ask me what the kids would like for Christmas. Here’s the thing– just because the kids want it, doesn’t mean that I want it in my house. I love toys that inspire creativity within my kids, but lately I’ve been feeling like most of their toys are becoming cluttery dust collectors after a couple of weeks instead of vehicles to explore their imaginations and creativity. Lately I’ve been preferring the gifts of activities and experiences to the gifts of toys.
The books on the list that I’m sharing today range from old favorites that have kept my kids creating for hours to some new fabulous finds. I hope that you find something on this list that inspires creativity in the creative kid in your life!

How to Draw a Unicorn and Other Cute Animals with Simple Shapes in 5 Steps– My daughter loves to draw cute animals but doesn’t have a ton of confidence in her drawing abilities. This book has taught her how to draw all of her favorite animals and adorable ways to customize them with the cutest accessories including sweaters, suspenders and berets!
Kawaii Doodle Class: Sketching Super-Cute Tacos, Sushi, Clouds, Flowers, Monsters, Cosmetics, and More– Bean loves drawing in Kawaii style and this book has taught her how to do just that. Kids will learn the basic shapes for Kawaii eyes, mouths and body shapes and then they can combine them to make their own adorable creations.
The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids: 60 Easy Plant-Based Recipes Kids Can Make to Stay Healthy and Save the Earth– I’ll confess, I bought this book originally for me but my kids love it just as much as I do. It’s packed full of healthy plant based recipes that have fun, kid friendly twists– “Dew Drop Lemonade” (homemade lemonade with chia seeds) and “Dino Rolls” (dinosaur kale with nut or seed butter) are a few of our faves!
America’s Test Kitchen The Complete Cookbook For Young Chefs– This is another one that I bought for myself for inspiration for the cooking classes that I teach, but that my whole family has loved. Packed with easy to make, family friendly recipes that will get your entire family in the kitchen cooking! I’ve started having my daughter pick a meal or two each week from this book that she can pretty much prepare by herself!
The Kids’ Book of Hand Lettering: 20 Lessons and Projects to Decorate Your World– Learning to hand letter has been on my crafting bucket list for a really long time. This book breaks it down so that it’s simple enough for a child to do– which means hopefully I can do it too! Filled with 20 fun projects that you can make with your new hand lettering skills this book is fun for parents and kids to learn a new hobby together!
Klutz Lego Make Your Own Movie– We’re a big fan of Klutz kits in the Hello Creative Family house and the Lego Make Your Own Movie kit is one of our favorites. Your kids will learn how to make stop motion movies using lego figures as the stars! My kids get so excited to show us the stop motion movies they’ve created and have even asked if they can start their own Youtube Channel!
The Lego Ideas Book: Unlock Your Imagination– When I was a kid I had a big bucket full of lego and my imagination. We never had lego kits in our home. We would make things, tear them apart and then make something new. I love that this book helps my kids think outside the box (or kit) when it comes to their lego creations!
Klutz Make Your Own Mini Erasers– My daughter and her friends are obsessed with this Klutz kit. They could literally spend hours creating erasers that they then bring to school to give to friends and/or use in class. Pick up an extra pack of Eraser Clay here so that the fun doesn’t run out when the clay in your kit does!
365 Writing Prompts for Kids– I still think back to my high school creative writing class as one of my most favorite classes ever. My dad says that it was when I was taking that class that he knew that one day I would be a writer. One of my favorite things about the class was that we’d start each day by writing for 10 minutes from a writing prompt that our teacher gave us. This book is filled with 365 writing prompts that will get your creative kid in the habit of writing.
642 Things To Draw: Young Artists Edition– One of the best ways to develop a new skill or habit is by doing it every single day. This book is a great way to get your child in the habit of drawing and expressing themselves creatively each and every day. Encourage your child to start each morning or end each day by drawing a new image from within this book. By the end of the year they’ll have an amazing new creative hobby!
Designing with Pixar: 45 Activities to Create Your Own Characters, Worlds, and Stories– 1 part glimpse into the world of a Pixar designer, 1 part activity book, 2 parts serious fun! This book shares different things that Pixar designers consider when creating characters and how different small changes can have a big impact on a characters look and even personality. Once each idea is explored there is a page where the child is able to put those ideas into effect and explore their own imaginations through Pixar’s favorite characters and iconic scenes.
Bonus Books:
The Day The Crayons Quit– This book along with The Day the Crayons Came Home (below) are 2 of my son’s favorite books. Though the books don’t include instructions or activities, I’m firmly convinced that they have influenced his creativity. I love the simplistic drawings from Oliver Jeffers and the creative letters written by each color in a box of crayons (aka Drew Dewalt).
The Star Wars Cookbook- Wookiee Pies, Clone Scones, and Other Galactic Goodies– Get your Star Wars loving family members into the kitchen to create some delicious Star Wars inspired treats! This book is written by my friend, Lara Star, and is seriously fun.

These were some really nice suggestions. I especially liked the cookbook for kids and LEGO ideas. My nephew had a Klutz Movie maker so I have personally used it and it is a really creative set for kids.
