We have been extremely fortunate in my family to not have any food allergies. It’s a good thing too because we LOVE food. Bean started kindergarten this year and it opened up my eyes to a whole knew world of food allergies.
At school all food has to be nut free and sometimes nut free isn’t good enough. Often lunch room helpers are on the lookout for the nut free symbol and if they don’t see it… well that cookie is going in the garbage.
At birthday parties it’s now common practice to ask in the birthday party invitation for food allergies. Dairy allergies, gluten intolerance from Celiac disease (when the body is unable to digest gluten) and reactions to things like strawberries, pineapple and eggs are things that birthday party host parents have to be aware of.
Celiac disease effects thousands of Canadian kids making normal childhood activities like playdates, birthday parties and summer camp extremely difficult.
Rudi’s Gluten-Free Bakery™ wants to give kids living with Celiac the same chance to go to camp as other kids. Rudi’s is offering 20 children (10 in Canada and 10 in the United States) the chance to spend a week at a summer camp where the food is completely gluten-free through their Happy Camper Scholarship. Imagine how great it would be for gluten-free kids to get to go to camp and not have to worry about what they eat!
Between February 18 – March 18, 2014, Canadian parents* with eligible children ages 8-17, can enter the Happy Camper contest by ‘liking’ Rudi’s Gluten-Free on Facebook and helping their child submit a 100-word statement on what makes him or her special. Winners will be notified by April 1, 2014, to allow time to plan for the summer camp experience of a lifetime.
Rudi’s Gluten-Free is proud to support kids and help them enjoy a carefree week of camp without worrying about what they eat. Parents of Happy Camper scholarship winners can also rest easy knowing their son or daughter is having a safe, joyful experience fueled with yummy and delicious gluten-free foods.
