Cricut & Elf On The Shelf

The possibilities for Cricut Elf On The Shelf Ideas are endless!
In this post, I’m going to help you take your Elf’s antics to the next level by sharing with you how to create an Elf on the Shelf snowman costume using your Cricut, felt and glue, and how to create the cutest snowman decals to transform toilet paper rolls into snow people!
Do you want to build a snowman? I certainly do!
Your Cricut cutting machine is your perfect partner in crime for elf antics! You can use it to craft custom accessories, props, and even interactive scenes that will leave your kids in awe each morning.
Whether you’ve been using your Cricut for years, or this is your first Christmas with your machine, this fun idea will help you infuse some holiday magic into your Elf on the Shelf schedule.
What is Elf on the Shelf?
An Elf on the Shelf is a magic scout elf from the North Pole. Santa Claus sends the elves to families who would like to host an elf in their home. Elves arrive on December 1st and they hang out in the Christmas tree, sit on the mantle, or with their little elf head poking out of the top of a Christmas stocking. He or she comes with a book that explains this incredible holiday tradition.
If this is your first year with your elf you may have some Elf questions. Let me answer a few of them for you!
When does the Elf on the Shelf arrive?
Most families welcome their elf on December 1st, but some introduce theirs after Thanksgiving.
Can kids touch the elf?
According to tradition, touching the elf will cause it to lose its magic. However, you can use a pair of “magic gloves” or create a Cricut-made sign reminding kids to “Look but don’t touch!” Find my Cricut Made Elf Moving Gloves project here!
How do I explain the elf’s arrival if we didn’t have one last year?
The elf arrives with a book explaining this magical Christmas tradition. I think it would be fun to pair it with a Cricut-made letter from Santa, explaining that your family has been specially chosen to host one of Santa’s helpers.
What Happens To The Elf On The Shelf At Night?
Each night, the elf magically transports themselves back to Santa’s workshop to report if children should be on the good list or the naughty list. It’s important for children to be on their very best behavior! The next day, they head back to the hosts house to hide and do something fun to delight their child. When your child wakes up, they get to hunt for the elf’s new spot.
What Is An Elf On The Shelf’s Favorite Snack?
Our elves favorite snacks are chocolate, candy canes, marshmallows, sugary cereal, Christmas cookies, cake, maple syrup (obviously… we have a Canadian elves!), mandarin oranges and pretty much any other holiday treats.
Do Elves On The Shelf Have Pets?
Elves sometimes also have their own pets! They appear to children as a stuffed animal, but at night they turn into the real deal and they do their own scouting of the house while their elf goes to visit Santa. My favorite elf pets are reindeer, Arctic foxes and and also St. Bernards!

Is An Elf On The Shelf Naughty or Nice?
Generally, most elves are nice proper elves and bring little gifts like an advent calendar on the first day of the month, tiny lego sculptures, candy canes and other sweet treats. Some elves even like to bake Christmas cookies! However, some are naughty elves that might make little messes around the house using fun ingredients like sprinkles, marshmallows, and chocolate.
Whether your elf leans more to the nice side, naughty side or is a mix of the two, children love waking up to discover the elf antics!
Elf on the Shelf: Do You Want to Build a Snowman Cricut Project

Create an adorable holiday scene for under the Christmas tree using toilet paper, vinyl, cardstock, felt, glue and your Cricut!
Why I Love This Elf on the Shelf Snowman Idea
Last summer, my family and I moved to Hawaii. Living in Hawaii means sunny weather, beautiful beaches… but not much snow!
My kids are 12 and 16 now, but they still love Christmas magic… especially waking up each morning to see what kind of mischief our elf got into– like making toilet paper snow people!
There are three things that I look for when I’m making an Elf on the Shelf project:
- It’s quick and easy.
- I can reuse parts of the project year after year.
- I already have most, if not all of the supplies needed at home.
This project checked all 3 boxes! I hope that you and your family get as much joy from it as my family and I did!
Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Build Your Elf’s Snowman World

Ready to get started making your elf’s snowman costume and snowman stickers for the toilet paper rolls? I’m going to walk you through step by step how to create this fun project!
Supplies You’ll Need
To create this project, gather the following materials:
- Cricut cutting machine (I used my Cricut Maker 3 so that I could use my rotary blade to cut the felt, however you can also cut felt using a fine point blade)
- Cricut Fine Point Blade (for cutting vinyl and cardstock)
- Cricut Rotary Blade (for cutting felt… if you don’t have a rotary blade you can use the fine point blade)
- Cricut Cutting Mats (I used the Cricut LightGrip Mat and Cricut FabricGrip Mat)
- Cricut Pens (for writing on the snowman signs. This pack of Cricut pens has a ton of color options!)
- Felt (white, black, red and orange. This felt pack from Cricut has all your colors covered!)
- Vinyl (for stickers to transform the toilet paper rolls. I love the quality and color selection in this Cricut Value Vinyl bundle.)
- Cardstock (for making a sign. I used a combination of white and green glitter.)
- A stick (I cut one from my backyard. I used the stick as a way for the Elf to hold the sign. You can also use a toothpick)
- Glue (Gorilla glue, hot glue gun or craft glue will do the trick)
- Glue Dots (I used these as a removable way to help the snowman hat stick to the elf’s forehead)
- Toilet Paper (This is the star of the show! I’m sure you have some around the house somewhere!)
- Cut Files (I have this project all laid out and ready to go in Cricut Design Space! Everything is already sized perfectly and is ready to cut. Find it here!)
Cut The Materials For Your Project

- Open my Elf On The Shelf Snowman Project in Cricut Design Space (link in supply list above). It is already sized appropriately and ready to cut.
- Cut the snowman body from white felt, the snowman hat and arms from black felt, the snowman scarf and hat band from red felt (or your favorite color) and the snowman nose from orange felt. I used my rotary blade for cutting my felt and cut on the FabricGrip Cutting Mat.
- Cut the snowman sign pieces from cardstock. Cricut Design Space will prompt you to load each color of pen. I used white cardstock for the front pieces of sign with writing and green glitter cardstock for the background pieces. The LightGrip Cutting Mat is my favorite mat for cutting cardstock.
- Cut the toilet paper snowman decal pieces from vinyl. I used black vinyl for the eyes, mouth and charcoal buttons, orange vinyl for the carrot noses and red vinyl for the snow woman’s bow. For this project I used Cricut Value Vinyl and my LightGrip Cutting Mat.
Assemble The Elf On The Shelf Snowman Costume

- Collect your felt snowman body, hat, scarf, hat band, arms and carrot nose on your work surface.
- Use glue to assemble your snowman costume gluing the felt pieces together.
- Once the glue has dried, put the costume on your elf, sticking the arms through the arm holes and the face in the face hole. You may want to use a couple of glue dots to help stick the costume to the front of your elf.
Assemble The Snowman Signs

- Use glue to assemble your signs. Attach the front pieces of the signs to the backer pieces.
- Use glue to attach a stick or toothpick to the back of the sign so that the snowman elf can hold it.
Prep The Snowman Vinyl Stickers

- Weed your vinyl removing the excess vinyl, leaving your vinyl stickers behind on the paper backing.
- Optional: Transfer the snowman nose and bow to the same backer sheet as the black snowman pieces.
- Glue the “Snowman Parts” label to the sheet of the snowman stickers.
Put Together Your Snowman Scene

All that you have left to do is assemble your perfect snowman scene. One of my favorite parts of Elf On The Shelf is deciding where the elf is going to hide each night!
Will it be under the Christmas tree? In the craftroom? How about in the bathroom since that’s where the toilet paper is found?
- Dress your elf in the snowman costume.
- Unwrap a package of toilet paper. You may want to stick your elf so their legs are inside one of the rolls to stand them up, or so that the elf is sitting with their back against the roll.
- Lay out the sticker sheet. You might want to consider adding the stickers to one of the toilet paper snowmen so that your kiddos get the idea of what should be done with the toilet paper.

Take Your Elf On The Shelf Snowman Scene To The Next Level
Want to add a bit of extra magic to your Elf on The Shelf snowman scene? Here are a few ideas to get you started!
- Make extra accessories for your snowman– scarves, glasses, a hat, broom, holly. The possibilities are endless.
- Cut out extra sticker faces for your snow people– a winky face, sticking out their tongue, and blushing cheeks are a few ideas.
- Take the snow fun to the next level with a materials for a snowball fight! Marshmallows, mini marshmallows, cotton balls, pom-poms, non breakable plastic ornaments or these reusable indoor snowballs are all great ideas that are so much fun!
- Get your kiddos toy friends involved in the snowman fun! Make snowman costumes for Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or other favorite friends!
- Take the frosty theme one step further and create vinyl snowflake decals using removable vinyl to put in your window!
- Use HTV to put snowman faces onto t-shirts for your kids so that they can dress up like a snowman just like the elf!
Not only do these ideas bring a winter wonderland indoors, but they are also great photo opportunities for holiday memories.
