Save this idea for your next ocean theme or summer craft session!

There’s just something magical about the ocean that speaks to my soul. I’ve always lived near the water—first in Bellingham, Washington, then Vancouver, BC, and now in beautiful Hilo, Hawaii. Each place had its own ocean personality, but all of them brought me the same joy: the smell of the salty breeze, the soothing crash of waves, and the sparkle of sunlight dancing on the surface.
Maybe it’s written in the stars—both my son and I are Cancers, a water sign ruled by the moon and symbolized by the crab. Whether it’s that astrological connection or simply my lifelong love of the sea, I have always loved anything ocean themed– including ocean-themed crafts.
Today’s project is one of my favorites: a sweet and simple egg carton crab craft that’s perfect for little ocean explorers.
Why Ocean Crafts Are Perfect for Kids

Ocean crafts spark creativity while introducing kids to the wonders of marine life and ocean animals. Whether you’re homeschooling, planning a beach-themed birthday, or just trying to keep little hands busy over summer break, ocean crafts are always a hit.
They’re also wonderfully versatile—pair them with a book about sea life, turn them into a classroom project, or use them to decorate an under-the-sea themed playroom or reading nook.
Why We Love Egg Carton Crafts
If you’ve been here a while, you know I’m a big fan of upcycled crafts. Not only are they budget-friendly, but they also teach kids the value of turning trash into treasure. Other upcycled materials I love to keep on hand:
- Toilet paper rolls
- Paper towel tubes
- Cereal boxes
- Yogurt cups
- Jar lids
- Brown paper bags
- Paper plates
- Coffee filters
- Plastic or paper cups
- Scrap paper

Egg Carton Crab Craft Tutorial

This cheerful crab is easy to make and uses simple materials most crafters already have at home. Read on for our supply list and step-by-step tutorial.
Supplies:
- Empty egg carton
- Scissors
- Red paint
- Paintbrush
- Red pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Glue (hot glue or craft glue)
Instructions:

Cut the Egg Carton:
Use scissors to cut out a single egg carton section. This will be the crab’s body.

Paint the Egg Carton:
Paint it red and let it dry completely.

Prepare the Legs and Claws:
Cut 8 short pieces of pipe cleaner for legs.
Cut 4 slightly longer pieces for claws.
Twist 2 of the longer pieces into claw shapes (repeat for the second claw).

Attach the Legs and Claws:
Glue 4 legs on each side of the crab / egg carton.
Slightly bend the ends of each pair of legs to mimic crab legs.
Glue the crab’s claws to the front.

Make and Attach the Crab Eyes:
Cut 2 small pipe cleaner pieces.
Glue googly eyes to one end of each, then attach them to the middle of the top of the egg carton.

Final Touches:
Adjust the legs and claws for a lively look—and say hello to your crabby creation! I hope your kids have so much fun completing this easy prep project!
