Hi crafty friends! No flavor says fall more than warm apples coated in cinnamon and sugar. Do you agree? If you do, then you are going to love the recipe I’m sharing with you today!

I’m a big fan of apple pie and apple crumble but sometimes it’s fun to experiment with new ingredients– Like egg roll wrappers!

My mom is hands down the best pie crust maker in the whole entire world, however pie crust intimidates the heck out of me! I just feel like I can’t live up to my mom’s homemade pie crust. Confession– If I make a pie at home it’s almost always made with a store bought pie crust. My mom wouldn’t dream of using store bought pie dough, so when they come to our house and I’m making an apple dessert I tend to go with an easy apple crumble.

Apple crumbles are so easy that anyone can make them. The same can be said for today’s recipe. We are taking a beautiful apple filling, folding it in egg roll wrappers, baking them until they are golden brown and then adding a sprinkle of cinnamon-sugar on top. My tummy is grumbling just thinking about this delicious sweet treat!

Apple Pie Filling or Fresh Apples?

Two ladybugs on an apple at an apple farm in BC.

I love spending time in the kitchen cooking delicious, homemade food for my family. For me, homemade food is filled with love but sometimes mama wants a quick and easy recipe so she can spend time with her family instead of sweating over a hot oven in the kitchen.

That’s one of the reasons why I love this recipe so much. It’s so versatile and has so many options. You really can’t go wrong with this recipe.

Make it with canned apple pie filling or create your own apple mixture!

Homemade Apple Pie Filling

Homemade Apple Pie Filling

Want to DIY your own apple pie filling? You go girl! Here are my instructions for a delicious filling your whole family will love. This apple pie filling is so good it will have your kids fighting over who gets to lick the bowl!

Homemade Apple Pie Filling Ingredients:

  • 3 apples–peel, core, quarter and then cut into slices (I love to do a mix of apples for my apple pie filling. My favorite mix includes granny smith apples, honeycrisp apples and ambrosia apples. This will give you a beautiful combination of textures and flavors. The granny smith stays crisp, the honey crisp keeps it’s form but is softer than the granny smith and the ambrosia turns into a delicious apple sauce. Have fun experimenting with different combinations from the produce section of your grocery store or better yet visit your local apple farm and ask for their favorites!)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon clove
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch or 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Homemade Apple Pie Filling Directions:

  1. In a large saucepan combine apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla, brown sugar and cornstarch or flour. Fold to combine ingredients.
  2. Place the saucepan on medium-high heat and add the water. Stir often and cook for 4-5 minutes until mixture starts to thicken.
  3. Reduce temperature to medium-low heat and cover the saucepan with a lid. Simmer for approximately 10 minutes or until apples have softened.
  4. Remove from heat and use for Apple Pie Egg Rolls or a variety of other recipes. This tastes so good, warm over vanilla ice cream!

Oven or Air Fryer?

Remember when I said above that this recipe is so versatile? Well I meant it! You really can not go wrong with it! Make these egg rolls by baking them on a baking sheet, by air-frying them in your air fryer, heck you could even fry them in a large skillet in some melted butter! I’m giving you the instructions below for how to make these in the oven but you could also put them in an air fryer pre-heated to 400F and cook them for 10-15 minutes flipping half way through. Make sure to not overcrowd your air fryer. You want air to circulate around each egg roll so you may want to cook these in batches.
