We’re back today with another beautiful project in partnership with our friends at EnviroKidz! Today we’re celebrating one of my favorite animals– koalas, along with one of my family’s favorite cereals– Koala Crisp Cereal!
Here are 5 facts about koalas that you may not know:
- Think that koalas are bears? Think again! These adorable fuzzy grey animals are actually marsupials! A distinctive characteristic of marsupials is that they carry their young in a pouch. Koala joeys love being snuggled up close to their mamas!
- Do you have a child that would be happy to eat EnviroKidz cereal all day long, every single day? They have something in common with koalas! In the animal world koalas could be considered “picky eaters” because they only eat one food– eucalyptus! They eat up to 1 kilo of eucalyptus a day! Eucalyptus is poisonous to most animals but koalas have a special organ called a caecum which helps detoxify the chemicals in the leaves!
- You could give a koala a high five! Just like humans, koalas have five digits on their front and hind paws. On a koala’s front paws, two of their “fingers” are opposed to each other so it looks like they have two thumbs! This helps the koala hold onto branches and grip their food. On their back paws the second and third digits are fused together to create a grooming claw.
- Are you a chatterbox? So are koalas! Koalas communicate with each other by making a range of noises. One of the funniest noises they make sounds like a combination of snoring and burping! It’s called a bellow and you can see a koala making that noise here. Do you know anyone else who makes noises like that? Pretty funny to imagine that big noise coming from such a sweet, docile animal!
- Sadly koalas numbers are on the decline because of deforestation and a massive wildfire that happened in Australia between July 2019 and March 2020. With the trees that they called home now gone, koalas are spending more time on the ground looking for food and shelter. Being on the ground is dangerous for koalas because they can be hit by cars, attacked by dogs and other prey animals and they are more likely to fall ill due to stress induced diseases. Luckily you can help by eating delicious cereal your family loves! EnviroKidz donates a portion of their sales from the Koala Crisp Cereal to Australian Koala Foundation.
To help celebrate our favorite animal, we decided to create an adorable Koala Felt Stocking! We think he’s just as cute as can be, and I can’t wait to see him filled with stocking stuffers on Christmas morning! My kids are already fighting over who gets him, so I may have to make a whole family of koala stockings all with different colored scarves!

DIY Koala Stocking- 30 Minute Christmas Project
Fun Fact: Did you know that in Australia, Christmas is celebrated in the summer? That’s right! Christmas is still celebrated in Australia on December 25th, but it’s at the beginning of their summer holiday! Summer break in Australia is from December to February so kids are off school too!

DIY Koala Felt Stocking
Ingredients
- Koala Stocking Template or SVG File (see box above).
- Grey Felt You will need two pieces that are roughly 12X19 inches each
- Pink Felt For the Ears
- Black Felt For the eyes and nose
- Red Felt For the scarf and holly berries
- Green Felt For the holly leaves
- Scissors
- Hem tape
- Sewing Pins
- Thread
- Sewing Machine or Sewing Needle
- Fabric Glue
Instructions
If Using An Electronic Cutting Machine To Cut Your Felt
- Upload your cut file to your cutting machine's design software. Size the stocking to how big you would like it to be. Our stocking measured 11.5X18. Cut each of the pieces out of felt. We used our Cricut Maker and a rotary blade. You will also want to cut a piece of felt or Christmas fabric to use for the scarf. Our scarf measured 3/4 inches wide by 30 inches long.
If Cutting Your Felt By Hand
- Print out our template on your printer. Tape the paper stocking pieces together. Cut two stockings and the stocking loop out of grey felt, the eyes and nose out of black felt, the ears out of pink felt the holly out of green felt and the holly berries out of red felt. You will also want to cut a scarf out of a long strip of felt or Christmas fabric. I suggest cutting it long and then trimming it how you would like it. Our finished scarf was 3/4 inches wide by 30 inches long.
Assembly
- Fold the top of your stocking down so that the top edge lines up with the top of the koala's ears. Seal closed with hem tape. Repeat on the opposite side making sure that your second stocking piece is mirrored to your first piece.
- Lay one of your stocking pieces on your work surface. Fold your stocking loop in half and place it in the top corner, with the part with the open ends laying on top of your stocking. Lay your second stocking piece on top making sure to line up all the edges. Pin in place.
- Using either your sewing machine or a needle and thread sew all the way around your stocking, leaving the top opening of your stocking unsewn. We used the blanket stitch for our stocking.
- Use fabric glue to glue together the top and the bottom layers of your koala's ears.
- Use fabric glue to glue the center of the ears, the eyes and the nose to your stocking.
- Tie the felt that you cut for the scarf around the koala's "neck". Use glue to glue on the holly leaves and holly berries.
- Use your scissors to cut a fringe on either end of the koala's scarf.
- Lay your stocking aside until the glue has dried. May we suggest a snack of Koala Crisp Cereal while you wait?

Panda Puffs or Leapin Lemurs would be the ones I would try first, because I love everything peanut butter. The mascot that is my favorite though, is probably the Cheetah- I adore cats of all sizes!

I am in love with that adorable cheetah. Surprise to me because normally I would go for the turtle but that cheetahs soft face just jumped out at me. As far as the cereal flavor, the cheetah chops with the raspberry to it would be our go to try first.
