Child with summer sensory bin

If you’re new to sensory bins, you’re in for a treat! They are a huge hit for kids. A sensory bin is simply a container filled with materials that engage your child’s senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even smell.

They often include bases like water, sand, rice, or beads, along with themed toys and tools for scooping, pouring, and imaginative play.

Sensory bins provide open-ended play that encourages kids to explore, create, and learn in a hands-on way—perfect for those curious minds!

Summertime is the perfect season to take sensory play to the next level—outdoors! Here’s why sensory bins are a must for your summer routine during free play time:

  • ☀️ Outdoor Fun: Messy play? No problem when you’re outside!
  • 💦 Water Play Perks: Cool down while stimulating sensory development.
  • 📚 Learning Through Play: Practice fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, STEM concepts (like floating vs. sinking), and imaginative thinking.
  • 🌺 Nature Exploration: Incorporate natural elements like sand, rocks, seashells, and water.
  • 🎉 Holiday Themes: Celebrate summer events like the 4th of July with festive sensory activities.

Sensory bins make great summer activities and also give kids independent playtime—a win-win for busy parents balancing summer schedules!

Learning about the seasons helps kids connect with the world around them. Summer break offers endless opportunities for:

  • Exploring weather patterns (hot days, thunderstorms, cool breezes)
  • Discovering ocean life, beaches, and water ecosystems
  • Understanding plant growth in gardens and parks
  • Celebrating cultural events like Independence Day

By tying sensory play to seasonal themes, kids build awareness of nature, time, and their environment—all while having fun!

Girl with summer printables at craft table

When my kids were little, figuring out how we were going to spend the summer hours took up a ton of brain space. It was a constant balancing act. On one hand, I wanted to soak up every bit of summer making core memories. On the other, I was running a business (and a household!) and needed time to work.

I was always on the lookout for screen-free activities that felt special—and sensory play was a favorite. One summer, my husband and I built a DIY Water Spray Table for our son, and it became the go-to activity every single day.

If you’re looking for even more resources for keeping your kiddos engaged, (and getting some quiet amongst the clutter and chaos of kids being home for the summer season) check out the printables section of our website! We have ideas for kids of all ages!

Here are some favorites for summer!

…and so many more in our Printables Library!

With a little creativity (and maybe some water play!), summer sensory bins can turn ordinary days into magical childhood memories. Whether you’re setting up an ocean adventure, a patriotic celebration, or a DIY ice cream shop, these activities are a fantastic way to keep kids learning, exploring, and having fun.
