The Symbolism of Butterflies

Watercolor Butterflies

Butterflies have deep symbolism throughout many cultures. The most obvious of course would be metamorphosis. Through the life cycle of a butterfly they transform from larvae, to caterpillar to beautiful butterfly. Many people feel deep emotional connection to butterflies because it mirrors big changes within their own life.

The Celtic symbolism of butterflies is motherhood and femininity which I think is beautiful.

In Christian tradition the butterfly is a symbolism of rebirth, resurrection, new beginnings and the start of something beautiful. They are especially popular around Easter.

In the Chinese culture butterflies are a symbol of long life. Two butterflies symbolize undying love.

Many cultures see the butterfly as a representation of life and death and feel that when they see a butterfly that it is a sign that a departed loved one is near.

I personally love this symbolism and decided to incorporate it into the design elements of my free cut file.

Simple Butterfly Heart SVG

Butterfly Heart Sweatshirt

I have many friends who see butterflies as a symbol of their child who they tragically lost, or a loved one who departed this earth too soon.

When I sat down to think of my butterfly design, I thought of how losing a loved one is like having a piece of your heart is flying away. If you are a religious person you have faith in your heart that your loved one is flying away to a place that is bigger and better and that you will see them again.

That is the symbolism that I see when I look at this design. A piece of your heart breaking into a million little pieces and flying towards the sky. It’s beautiful and tragic all in one. And every time you see a butterfly you will think of your loved one.

That is my interpretation of this design, but there are so many different ways it could be interpreted. I would love to hear what you think when you see it!

I gave my Cricut Facebook group a sneak peek of this design (which I do with all of my cut files) and I would love to see you there too! You can join us here.

  1. Crystal, your post today struck my heart. My son-in-law lost his grandmother last Sat and my 11 yr old granddaughter was especially close even tho they lived many miles apart. They would Facetime every day . “Gigi” told my son-in-law that when they saw a butterfly, everyone would know it was her, so we planned a butterfly release so my ganddaughter could say goodbye. I loved “Many cultures see the butterfly as a representation of life and death and feel that when they see a butterfly that it is a sign that a departed loved one is near.” Thank you for sharing what was a beautiful message as well as the awesome cut files. I see a t-shirt & maybe more things in the very near future for my sweet ganddaughter.
Bless you and also praying Jesse will have a good outcome. Thanks again for the awesome message today,

    1. Hi Tammy,

I’m so sorry I didn’t respond sooner. I saw this comment last week when you posted it. I read it, started crying and just didn’t have the words at the moment to respond. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave these kind words. I’m so sorry for your loss. Please give your granddaughter a big hug for me. I hope that my design helps bring her some healing and makes her feel like her Gigi is always near. Sometimes I create a design and have no idea if anyone is ever going to use it. I put it out there in the world and hope that it will touch someone. So thank you for letting me know that the design made an impact on you.

Sending you so much love! Happy Crafting.

      Best Wishes,

      Crystal
