I’ve always loved Halloween, though I’ll admit I wasn’t always a fan of the weather that came with it. Living in the Pacific Northwest, fall often meant grey skies, soggy leaves, and endless rain rather than crisp autumn days and colorful falling leaves. These days, living in Hawaii, I get to enjoy spooky season without the gloomy backdrop. With warm breezes and bright skies, October feels like pure magic.

As a kid in the ’80s and a teen in the ’90s, I had the ultimate lineup of ghost movies to inspire my imagination. Casper, Ghostbusters, Ghost, Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus, The Sixth Sense… ghosts were everywhere! They were silly, scary, heartwarming, and sometimes all of the above. That love for friendly phantoms has stuck with me ever since.

It’s been so fun to see ghosts rise in popularity again over the past few years, not just at Halloween but year-round. Ghosts sipping coffee, reading books, wearing beanies… you name it, there’s a ghost version!

Of course, October is when they shine brightest, but I’ll happily make ghost crafts all year long. These projects are a sweet way to celebrate Halloween while also embracing the fun, cozy, and creative side of ghost culture.

A young boy with curly brown hair and a bright smile sits at a wooden table crafting a friendly ghost. He wears an orange shirt with a rainbow design while surrounded by glue, scissors, crayons, books, and potted plants. Behind him, a large jack-o’-lantern and more plants sit on a shelf by a sunny window with autumn trees outside, creating a cozy, cheerful Halloween scene.

Beyond the adorable factor, ghost crafts are packed with skill-building benefits.

  • Fine motor practice through tearing, pinching, snipping, gluing, and placing small pieces
  • Sensory play with textures like cotton, beans, yarn, coffee filters, and cheesecloth
  • Shape and spatial awareness while arranging eyes, mouths, and overlapping drawings
  • Process art exploration with blow painting, puffy paint, and glow-in-the-dark mediums
  • Language & pretend play as kids invent stories for their friendly phantoms
  • Confidence—these projects are quick wins that look great on the fridge or classroom wall

Most of these ideas come together in 15–30 minutes, making them perfect for classroom centers, playdates, or a cozy afternoon at home.
